President’s message (May 2024)

After a spring of warmish days and chilly nights, the temperatures are going up, and all h*ll is going to break out in our hives! (This is also known as swarm season). Queens commonly lay over 1,000 eggs per day and a vigorous younger one up to 2,000 eggs per day – so the populations will explode, crowding can easily occur, and you could easily see half of a hive flying over a neighbour’s fence, taking with it your dollars and your dreams of a bumper crop of honey. The swarm group received 14 calls last month; 6 were for honeybees. That’s going to go WAY up this month!

And, as you can see from the agenda below, we’re going to cover swarming at our meeting this coming Thursday evening. I hope to see you there!

PLEASE NOTE: It is time to renew your club membership if you haven’t already!! Annual memberships turned over as of April 30th. To make it confusing, your club membership card that gives you access to merchant discounts is on a calendar year, which is why many have already renewed. To renew, go to our website (www.capitalregionbeekeepers.ca); in the top banner, click on ‘Club’ and then choose ‘Annual Membership‘.
