In the last week I’ve noticed a dramatic drop-off in the number of foragers coming back laden with pollen; many are returning with skimpy loads, many with none at all – and most are coming in light and fast, so they’re not carrying much nectar, either. So, the dearth is here. I went off to buy sugar for the syrup to feed them – and was stunned by the price!! A 10-kg bag is now $18 in most stores! But a tip – at Costco and the Wholesale Club in Esquimalt, a 10-kg bag is only ~$14.50. You can get 20-kg bag ~$27 at those places, too; you’ll get some raised eyebrows from people wondering about your diet, but you’ll save a lot of money! And between now and the fall feedings, you’ll go through it. And every little bit of savings helps!
Our next meeting will, as usual, be held on the second Thursday of the month, Thursday July 13th at the Brentwood Seniors Centre, 1229 Clarke Road. Unfortunately, we will not be able to provide a Zoom link. If you cannot attend the meeting and wish to provide your opinion on this, please email me at president@capitalregionbeekeepers.ca.
I am writing earlier than usual. The Executive has prepared two documents for discussion and hopefully approval at the meeting, and we want to give you time to peruse them. One is a new Privacy and Information Sharing Policy, and the other is a new Outyard Policy and Process document. Once these are passed by the membership it is our intent to post them on our website for easy access. Please read them and be ready to discuss them at the meeting! If you can’t make the meeting, feel free to email me with any questions, concerns, or comments.
