General Meeting (July 2018)

The Capital Regional Beekeepers Association (CRBA) meets on the second Thursday of every month.

This meeting usually starts with a beginners/intermediate beekeeper corner 30 minutes before the regular club proceedings start around 7pm.

Minutes

  • Bill Fosdick called the meeting to order at 7:10pm and gave a preamble on evening’s meeting would be about.
    He thanked Don Lambert and Bob Liptrot for the work the do with the new beekeepers and the intermediate beekeepers.
    Bill introduced the club’s guest speaker for the evening, Ted Leischner. Ted is a retired agricultural college instructor. He is involved in “Plan Bee Now” helping communities become bee friendly. Ted spoke to the members on his method of moving bumblebee nests. You move each bumblebee separately to depopulate the nest.
  • Buy BC – Bob Thompson, director of North & South Saanich Agricultural Society which puts on the Saanich Fair (150 years this year). The Fairs idea to have stations to promote BuyBC throughout the Fair. The participants would have stamps to stamp the passports of the attendees of the Fair and to answer questions. The Fair would provide “selfie” frames and the attendees would post. There will be a prize awarded.
  • Conference in October 26, 27 and 28. Barry Denluck reported to the members what was in place for the upcoming AGM for the BCHPA which CRBA is hosting this year. Barry needs a volunteer to convene the Silent Auction. Volunteers are needed in other areas also.
  • What’s in Bloom – Nairn H
    Blackberries, fireweed (Nairn asked those who are going up to the fireweed to collect seed), herbs, lavender, borage, thistle, hollyhocks, single roses, goldenrod, linden trees.
  • Nairn mentioned the “Going Buggy” at Beaver Lake would be August 2nd from 11am to 2pm. Volunteers needed to help on the day.
  • What to do in July – Larry L
    Larry started with one of his wonderful stories “ice fishing in an arena”

    • move the hives to higher ground because at this time there will be a dearth (no nectar/pollen).
    • Check stores in the hive (they can go through a frame a day)
    • Check for mites
    • Make nucs for over wintering, see who has queens available, plan for the fall
    • Add supers when heading to the mountains.
  • Outyards – Derek W – those members who are heading to the outyards will need a purchased ($5) tag and put the owner’s identification on the hive (name, address and a contact number).
  • Fair volunteers – Graeme spoke to the members about signing for volunteering at the 3
    fairs which we attend. Saanich Fair, Sooke Fair and the Luxton Fair.
  • Irene T spoke to the members to enter the Saanich Fair to make a great display as the fair is 150 years old. There will be a honey tasting table and donated honey the from the members is needed for this event.
  • Meeting adjourned at 8:30pm.
