Minutes

  • Bill Fosdick called the meeting to order at 7:20 pm. He welcomed the members back from the Christmas season.
He stated that it had been a challenging year for beekeeping. Beekeepers needed an arsenal of tools to defend the hives from the late wasps this past year. Wasps were found alive in November and December because of the mild weather.
  • Bill F showed a video of Paul Stamet from Youtube on the use of mushrooms to help combat diseases in the hive.
  • BCHPA AGM Conference – Barry Denluck thanked his committee heads and all the volunteers who did such a great job on making the conference run smoothly. Rupert Rodes, Treasurer, Alanna Morbin, Jennifer Roberts – food & flowers, Jody Alyard – Trade Show, Bill Fosdick – Emcee. This was a team effort.
The conference made a surplus of $10,000 which ¼ goes into the Club’s confers.
  • Seedy Saturday – February 16th at the Conference Centre. Don Lambert has the observation hive. Bob Lucy called upon the members to volunteer to man the CRBA’s booth through the day.
  • Larry Lindahl spoke to the members on what they should looking for and doing in this month.
Monitor the hive to see whether the hive needs feeding, clean the entrance bottom board, check for mites on the bottom board, clean debris away from the hive, make sure the ventilation is okay and check to see what equipment is needed.
  • What to plant for honeybees – Nairn Hollot – always plant flowers in clumps so the bees do not have fly distances, your planting should be for plants to bloom through the seasons for forage, colours the bees prefer are yellow, blue, mauve and reds. Bees like all herbs.
  • Club Business – membership is now due. You can pay on line.
  • Next meeting will be February 14th.
