The Capital Regional Beekeepers Association (CRBA) meets on the second Thursday of every month.
This meeting usually starts with a beginners/intermediate beekeeper corner 30 minutes before the regular club proceedings start around 7pm.
Bill Fosdick called the meeting to order at 7:25 PM and welcomed the members and guests. He spoke about the new enemy of the bee, the giant hornet which was found in Nanaimo area.
Nairn Hollott spoke to the members as to what is blooming at this time, cosmos, coneflowers, sunflowers, roses, fall asters, Russian sage, heather and some herbs.
Larry Lindahl – What to do in the hive September and October – finish extracting honey, last check for varroa mites (mite count should be down to zero), get colonies down to winter size and make sure there are enough supplies for them.
Irene Tiampo thanked the members for the great turn out of entries and volunteers for the three days that the Saanich Fair. She also thanked those members who stayed Monday night and helped take down the exhibit (in record time). Thanks were given to Don Lambert who supplied the observation hive (which is the hit of the exhibit with both young and old). Thanks to Nairn who transported the entries to the Sooke Fair and brought them back for this meeting.
Bill informed the members that the club is wanting to purchase a third extractor so that there would be one in View Royal area with Jim Henry, one in the Metchosin area and one the Gordon Head area.
Bee Products
Alanna Morbin spoke about how she cuts comb for selling and entries. She uses wireless foundation.
Jennifer Olson spoke about what medicinal properties the honey has and what she does with the by products of the hive such as propolis. Her web site is under jenspice. She makes soaps, balms and many other products.
Carolyn Hissen showed the members how she (through trail and error) makes wax wraps. You can also go to Youtube to see other methods.
Other products that can be made are candles both molded and dipped.
