Executive Meeting (October 2019)

October 14, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Minutes

Present: Carolyn H, Bill F, Kimberley B and Irene T

Bill called the meeting to order at 7:15 PM.

November Meeting – Members social – tea and coffee and savories and sweets.
Collect ideas from the members as to what topics they would like presented in the new year. Bill would like to have 4 questions to be asked to the members attending:

  1. Are there topics that you are interested to be brought up in the meeting but have not been covered in the meetings?
  2. Who would you like to have as speakers at the meeting?
  3. How do you like the format of the meetings and what would you like to see changed?
  4. How would you like to get involved in the club?

Potluck – Savories and Sweets. Bring you own cup, plate and utensils.

Honey Extractor – Kazlyn Bonner spoke to Jim Henry about the use of the honey extractor:

  • Number of rental times this season? 30
  • Repairs this year? No repairs, but Jim thinks it is because he made an extra effort to meet with every person to go over how to handle the extractor. No cost of repairs.
  • How do people pay for the extractor rental? People pay Jim directly and some pay through PayPal.
  • Are people generally on time with picking up and returning the extractor? Yes this year has been great, people actually showed up when they said they would and they returned on time.
  • Were there many times when the extractor was rented and someone else wanted to use it? There is usually a wait list just before the hives are taken to the outyards and then just after. The time frame is about a week and most people seem to be able to make it work.
  • Should a deposit for the extractor (in case they don’t return it or break it)? Collecting a deposit probably makes sense, but it would complicate things. For example regular users can just drop off the extractor which means I don’t always have to home and secondly I would find it a challenge to tell someone we were holding back the deposit because they broke the extractor. I believe the damage to these extractors is more a result of poor designs and no direction from the manufacturer. For example the one in use at present has holes in the legs to bolt it down on a platform, as soon as we did that the legs ripped out of the welds. There is another extractor, but it is waiting for repairs to the gear box, which was new but only lasted 2 extractions.

Canvas the members to see if someone would look after the extractor, demonstration hive and the vaporizer in the Gordon Head area.

Demonstrate to the members how to use the extractors, possibly in the May or June meeting.

Themes for January, 2020:
Inventions and contraptions. Lesson to the members for presentations for educating elementary students on honeybees.

Take suggestions in the November meeting to map what to do in the 2020.

March Meeting will be the Annual General Meeting (usually is only 15 to 20 minutes).

Meeting adjourned at 8:30 PM.
