- August Get-together: permit is granted for 50, social event, food will be blueberries/shortcake/whipped cream and drinks.
Topic: Equipment assembly hacks Bill Hadden to bring frame building, offer members to bring their own Beekeeping Hacks, and Fall Fair preparation of items.
Action:
- Bill Hadden to bring frame building item,
- Bill C to post in newsletter asking for members to bring their own hacks
- Bill C to approach Caroline Hissen and Irene Tiampo to ask them to present on prepping items for the Saanich Fair, and to bring some show and tell items
- Laure Newnham to bring sign-up sheet for volunteers for Saanich Fair shifts if any still open.
- Bill Fosdick to bring shortcake, blueberries and whipping cream for 50
- Cindy Parker to bring gluten-free options, cups and bamboo forks, napkins
- Heather Welsford will bring beverages for 50
- Topic for September: group break outs for winterizing ideas with Bill F to summarize, and Saanich Fair ribbon presentation.
Action: Bill F to prepare something for winterizing topic.
- Frame Jigs: Bill Hadden is ready for them to be rented, he will distribute to extractor/vaporizer locations: , Jim Henry (View Royal) , Heather Welsford (Brentwood), Werner (Langford) and Alanna Morbin (Tillicum). $5 is agreed as rental cost.
- Hive Survival: Naomi Black will take over from Shirley Richardson by phone for next year.
- Vacant Positions:
- Saanich Fair Organizer – Laure Newnham and Mary Quayle have stepped forward to help Victoria Schedel with organization of this year’s Saanich Fair Beekeepers corner, but we still need to find ongoing organizer.
Action: Bill C to send out in newsletter an encouragement for members to enter their honey, honey frames, and wax.
- Education/Promotional materials Coordinator – vacant
- Outyards:
- New location? Janet still trying to find someone in Queesto able to speak to this, feels that it would be easier to scout the area, find a location, and approach them with specific request for that location. She has a lead from another person that is familiar with the area to help with the scouting for areas suitable for apiaries.
- Old pallets are rotting, unstable; these to be removed and new ones brought up; managers of each yard to organize this.
- Original yard allocations in the past A: 35 M: 25 J: 30 but this resulted in crowding, now for 2024 A: 35 M: 22 J: 28.
- Brief discussion given to marking out the designated spots in each outyard to ensure proper distribution and avoid members placing hives wherever they want.
