Executive Meeting (August 2023)

August 14, 2023 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Minutes

In attendance – Bill C, Dorothee T, Bill H, Victoria S, Mary Q, Cathy T, Cindy P, Bill F
Regrets – Don L

Meeting start 7:07pm

  • August Club Meeting – 75th Anniversary celebration
    Approx. 50 members in attendance.
Cake, coffee & cold drinks were enjoyed by everyone!
Don Lambert provided an interactive presentation on spinning honey and might washing. Several people really appreciated the opportunity to see it first hand.
  • Zoom – Amanda Johnson has volunteered to help with taking on the Zoom. Exec approved her for this and also as a Director-at-Large on the Exec
Action item: Bill C. will contact Amanda to confirm her role on the team & when she will be available to start.
  • A huge THANK YOU to Dorothee for all her work as the treasurer, most notably for her efforts to set the club up with the option for members to make payments via etransfer.
  • Treasurer – Heather Welsford has volunteered to take on the treasurer role, with all in the Executive in favor.
Action item: Bill C. will introduce Heather & Dorothee to begin the transition of the treasurer duties over to Heather.
  • September Meeting Planning:
    • New bee keeper corner; Don Lambert, how to prepare hives for the winter.
    • Intermediate corner; tbc
    • Main meeting; guest Brian Fackler , speak to us about the club activities in Portland, Oregon
    • Outyards; what is needed to close up the outyards for 2023
    • What to do in Sept – Larry L.
  • Outyards update – Bill H. shared that there is approximately 3 weeks of fireweed left for 2023.
  • Swarm Committee – recommendation/request
    • It would be very helpful to be able to access the member map on a mobile device in order to check with nearby beekeepers re lost bees, not everyone is at a computer
Action item: Bill C. will work with Werner on what the issue is with the club Google account; nobody receiving the two-factor authentication requests so people that have never been into site before are locked out and only existing users can access. Discussion that simplest solution will likely be to retire the current Google swarm account and create a new one – and have a record of the contacts entered.
    • Bumblebees: bumblebee nest collection is a large part of the swarm line job.  Most properties attended are expecting/interested in paying for the service. If we made them aware of a place on the CRBA site where a supportive donation could be made, a good proportion of people would contribute.
The club website does have a donation option, it can be found under “SHOP”. It would be a great idea to promote this option to the property owner when they ask about payment for the services provided.
Action Item: Bill C to discuss with Werner
    • Business cards:  many people are not aware who exactly they are calling when they call the swarm line, even after the CRBA volunteer has completed the task and left.  A club business card with the club phone number and website address would help with club awareness & marketing, and assist when the property owner asks about making a donation.
Action item: Bill C. will create a draft business card w/ the CRBA logo. Great idea!
  • Frame making jigs
Bill H. has tweaked the construction of the jigs and has shared that they will be available for rental soon.
They will be available for rent through the “SHOP” option on the club website.
Action Item: Bill C to discuss with Werner, ask him to move the ‘Donate’ button to front page, or create another button on front page
  • Future club meeting topics:
    • An interactive presentation on frame building
    • Home insurance & by-laws as they relate to bee keeping
