President’s message (November 2024)

Our monthly meeting is this coming Thursday, November 14th, Central Saanich Senior’s Centre, 1229 Clarke Rd, Brentwood Bay.

It is a Social Evening!

There is no formal agenda, giving everyone a chance to talk about or ask questions about anything you wish to raise in the company of other beekeepers, with an assortment of nibblies and treats to give you some energy. This has been the club’s November format for many years, and it has been a very popular one – and we hope to see you then and there!

There is no club meeting in December!

Our regular meetings start again in 2025 on the second Thursday of each month, so that would be January 9th (2025), same times, same place.

What to do this month

  • You should either do a mite count in each hive, or give each hive a hit of oxalic acid vapour then do a bottom board mite count. Last year there were indications of brood right through to January, so don’t let your guard down!
  • You should have reduced the number of boxes per hive. A standard is one bottom deep and an upper medium, but some choose a single deep for maximum heat conservation, up to 3 medium boxes.
  • Get your quilt boxes on above the upper brood box! And it’s a good idea to insert a spacer below that quilt box to make it easier to feed them fondant or sugar cake.
  • And – make up some fondant or sugar cake – have it ready to go when you need it. Recipes abound on line, or you can come to this week’s meeting and pick up some pointers!
